UofU Research Stands in Solidarity with the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander American Community

Dear research community,

As Vice President for Research, I echo President Watkins and Dr. Villarreal’s message of solidarity with our UofU Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander American communities as we mourn the tragic and violent murder of eight people – including six women of Asian descent – in Georgia on Tuesday, March 16th. The rise in anti-Asian hatred, violence, harassment, and discrimination over the past year is heartbreaking and unacceptable.

Racism and discrimination will NOT be tolerated within the UofU research community. We must collectively and firmly denounce race-based violence. We must take united and immediate action within our campus, local, and national communities to confront racial bias, hatred, and discrimination. I remain committed to holding myself, and our research community, accountable to the action of anti-racism as we continue the fight for justice and equality for all.

Below are several outstanding state-wide resources available to provide support for all members of our campus community who are experiencing fear, anxiety, and anger after this violent attack. We encourage those who need it to reach out for help. As always, the VPR Office is a resource for our entire research community.

Andrew S. Weyrich

Vice President for Research
