Honoring Juneteenth National Independence Day

Honoring Juneteenth National Independence Day

Announcement Release - June 18, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

In light of President Biden’s new bill establishing Juneteenth as a US Federal Holiday, the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) would like to express our support for this historic holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. This is only one step in addressing racism in our society and we in the VPR Office will continue to push forward to dismantle racism and discrimination in research at the U. We are proud of the actions we have taken so far, but know there is still so much more work to do.

In honor of Juneteenth, we echo U leadership’s message and encourage the U research community to take some time to recognize and reflect on how each of us can take action and work towards a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) in research at the U. Please know the VPR Office is readily available to provide support and resources on ways to enhance EDI in our research community. We hope all of you will be able to participate and join us in commemorating this historic day. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Andy Weyrich, Vice President for Research
Diane Pataki, Associate Vice President for Research
Erin Rothwell, Associate Vice President for Research Integrity & Compliance
