New Director of Energy & Geoscience Institute – Milind Deo, PhD

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Milind Deo as the Director of the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI), effective on July 1, 2021. In January 2021, Dr. Deo assumed the role of Interim Director from Dr. Raymond Levey who recently retired as Director of EGI for over 20 years. Dr. Deo comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience to lead EGI as a premier energy research institute in oil and gas, geothermal energy and carbon management.

Dr. Deo is the Peter D. and Catherine R. Meldrum Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah.  In 2020, he served as the Special Assistant to the Office of the Vice President of Research for EGI Operations. He is currently serving as the deputy director of the Center for Multi-Scale Fluid-Solid Interactions in Architected and Natural Materials (MUSE) a US DOE Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) at the University. In the past, Dr. Deo has served as the Associate Dean for Academics in the College of Engineering and as Chair of Chemical Engineering. His research is in reservoir engineering, carbon dioxide sequestration, geothermal energy and nanotechnology associated with energy processes. In addition, Dr. Deo has supervised the Ph.D. dissertations of 35 students and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Deo as the new Director of EGI. I look forward to partnering with Dr. Deo as we continue to fulfill the critical research missions of EGI and the University of Utah.

Sincerely,

Andrew S. Weyrich, PhD
Vice President for Research
