Extramural Funding Opportunities in EDI Research
The Vice President for Research Office has collected a list of extramural funding opportunities as part of our on-going commitment to support equitable, diverse, and inclusive research on our campus and in our broader communities. All available opportunities are published HERE, and will be updated bi-monthly. Please check each sponsor's solicitation for the most up-to-date information for each program, as the sponsor can change the details of the opportunity without notification.
If you are considering applying for an EDI-related funding opportunity and would like grant development support, please contact Mercedes Ward, Grant Development Specialist for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Sustaining Public Engagement Grants
Amount: between $50,000 and $225,000
Deadline: December 7, 2021
The American Council of Learned Societies is pleased to invite applications for ACLS Sustaining Public Engagement Grants, a responsive funding program made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan (SHARP) initiative. These grants are designed to repair the damage done to publicly engaged humanities projects and programs by the social and economic disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.Publicly engaged humanists today play key roles in co-creating and circulating knowledge for the public good, but these programs face greater risk of closure or reductions in uncertain times. ACLS seeks proposals for grants that will support established publicly engaged humanities projects, initiatives, or programs in accredited US colleges and universities. Applicants will be required to demonstrate how their programs engage with issues of urgent public interest in one or more of the program’s six key areas: racial equity; climate change; US-global relations; public health and pandemic recovery; strengthening democracy, and exploring America’s diverse history.
Amount: $450,000 in direct costs per year (up to 5 years)
Deadline: December 10, 2021
Through this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) solicits applications for Connecting Underrepresented Populations to Clinical Trials (CUSP2CT), a program that will implement and evaluate multilevel and culturally tailored outreach and education interventions with the primary goal of increasing referral and ultimately, accrual of underrepresented racial/ethnic (R/E) minority populations, to NCI-supported clinical trials (CTs) (National Clinical Trial Network (NCTN), NCI's Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP), and Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN)). The target population(s) should include individuals from underrepresented racial/ethnic (R/E) minority populations. Applicants should address cancer health disparities (CHD) through a network of local multidisciplinary and integrated partners that include community health educators (CHEs), lay health advisors (LHAs), community members, healthcare providers, and researchers working in coordination to educate and refer R/E minority populations to NCI-supported CTs, and increase awareness in providers about R/E minority participation in NCI clinical trials.
Amount: $400,000
Deadline: January 10, 2022
The purpose of this 5-year cooperative agreement is to improve the health and well-being
of
children, adolescents, and school staff in underserved and disproportionately affected
communities. The CDC’s Healthy Schools Branch plans to fund four nationally recognized
recipients with expertise and experience providing support to CDC-funded state education
agencies, districts, schools, out-of-school time providers, and the organization’s
constituents in the following priority areas:

Priority 2 - Emotional Well-Being
Priority 3 - Healthy Out-of-School-Time
Priority 4 - School Administrator Support and Action for Healthy Schools
Recipients will provide support through professional development and technical assistance,
dissemination, partnerships, and implementation. Expected outcomes to be achieved
by the end
of the 5-year period of performance include: (1) Increased use of CDC and other evidence-based
tools and resources; (2) Increased adoption and implementation of evidence-based school
health
policies, practices, and programs among state education agencies, districts, schools,
and out-of-
school time programs; and (3) Expansion of school-based mental health and health services.
NSF Research Coordination Networks in Undergraduate Biology Education (RCN-UBE)
Amount: $500,000 (also: Incubator proposals up to $75,000 for one year)
Deadline: January 25, 2022
The Research Coordination Networks for Biological Education (RCN-UBE) Program supports networks of investigators to link biological research discoveries with innovations in biology education to improve the learning environment in undergraduate biology classrooms. RCN-UBEs will support networks of investigators to communicate and coordinate their education efforts across disciplinary, organizational, institutional, geographical, and/or international boundaries. They will facilitate exchange of information and resources, integrate research and education activities for biologists/educators around topics of common interest, nurture a sense of community, and maximize cooperation and impact. The RCN-UBE program is particularly interested in increasing the participation of people from groups that are underrepresented in biological research and education such as women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. Proposals submitted to the program are strongly encouraged to involve PIs, co-PIs, postdoctoral fellows, students, and other personnel who are members of these groups. Proposers are also strongly encouraged to consider involving veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces as part of NSF's broader effort to promote veteran involvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research and education.
NSF MPS-Ascend External Mentoring (MPS-Ascend EM)
Amount: $900,000
Deadline: February 15, 2022
Note: This is a limited submission opportunity. Please contact Tyler Matsamas if considering applying.
The MPS-Ascend External Mentoring (MPS-Ascend EM) program aims to fund an institution (or collaboration of institutions) to provide a mentored career development program specifically designed for two cohorts of MPS-Ascend Fellows funded through the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MPS-Ascend NSF 21-573, and NSF 22-501) programs. These activities should be designed to build cohort experiences for MPS-Ascend Fellows funded through the MPS competitions, provide professional development opportunities, and provide appropriate mentoring and professional networks to allow the Fellows to transition into, advance, and succeed in independent academic (or other) research careers. Each proposal should address the complete spectrum of MPS-Ascend Fellows, across all MPS fields. Approximately 30-50 MPS-Ascend Fellows are expected per cohort. The MPS-Ascend program has a strong emphasis on increasing the participation of members of those groups most underrepresented as leaders in MPS fields, which includes Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, and Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Native Pacific Islanders.
