Extramural Funding Opportunities in EDI Research
The Vice President for Research Office has collected a list of extramural funding opportunities as part of our on-going commitment to support equitable, diverse, and inclusive research on our campus and in our broader communities. All available opportunities are published HERE, and will be updated bi-monthly. Please check each sponsor's solicitation for the most up-to-date information for each program, as the sponsor can change the details of the opportunity without notification.
If you are considering applying for an EDI-related funding opportunity and would like grant development support, please contact Mercedes Ward, Grant Development Specialist for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supp
- Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Amount: See RFA for details
Deadline: Submission dates vary by awarding IC
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hereby notify Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) (PD(s)/PI(s)) holding specific types of research grants (activity codes listed in RFA) that funds are available for administrative supplements to enhance the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research. This supplement opportunity is also available to PD(s)/PI(s) of research grants who are or become disabled and need additional support to accommodate their disability in order to continue to work on the research project. Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.
Amount: The application budget for the one-year UG3 phase is limited to $500,000 in
direct costs. Costs for each year of the UH3 phase are limited to $1 million in direct
costs.
Deadline: December 15, 2021; June 17, 2022
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages UG3/UH3 phased cooperative research applications to conduct efficient, large-scale embedded pragmatic or implementation trials with a high priority on improving health outcomes in Americans across the lifespan and health disparity populations who experience higher rates of certain diseases and higher mortality compared with the general population. The specific population with health disparities may be defined by race, ethnicity, geography or socioeconomic status. For the purposes of this funding opportunity, the NIH-designated U.S. health disparity populations definition includes: Blacks/ African Americans, Hispanics/ Latinos, American Indians / Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, underserved rural populations, and sexual and gender minorities (More information can found at the following link: https://www.nimhd.nih.gov/about/overview/). Awards made under this FOA will initially support a one-year milestone-driven planning phase (UG3), with possible transition to a trial conduct phase (UH3). UG3 projects that have met the scientific milestones and feasibility requirements may transition to the UH3 phase. The UG3/UH3 application must be submitted as a single application, following the instructions described in this FOA.
NSF Research and Mentoring for Postbaccalaureates in Biological Sciences (RaMP)
Amount: Anticipated $40,000,000 for 13-16 awards
Deadline: January 20, 2022
The Research and Mentoring for Postbaccalaureates (RaMP) in Biological Sciences program invites the submission of proposals to establish networks to support full-time research, mentoring, and training for recent college graduates who have had few or no research or training opportunities during college in research fields typically supported by the Directorate of Biological Sciences (BIO). Fostering the growth of a globally competitive and diverse research workforce and advancing the innovative scientific skills of the U.S. is a strategic objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF). To that end, proposals submitted to this program are expected to create strong evidence-based and inclusive mentorship programs that will advance the goal of creating a competitive and highly representative science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce in the U.S. Transitions into the STEM workforce could include pathways into research-focused M.S. or Ph.D. programs, industry, federal or state agencies, education and research centers, and other STEM careers.
NIH The Role of Work in Health Disparities in the U.S. (R01 Clinical Trials Optional)
Amount: According to scope
Deadline: February 5, 2022; June 5, 2022; October 5, 2022
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support innovative population-based research that can contribute to identifying and characterizing pathways and mechanisms through which work or occupation influences health outcomes and health status among populations with health and/or health care disparities, and how work functions as a social determinant of health.
NSF Centers for Innovation and Community Engagement in Solid Earth Geohazards
Amount: Anticipated $7,000,000 for 3-5 awards
LOI Deadline: November 30, 2021
Full Proposal Deadline: March 15, 2022
Note: This is a limited competition. Please contact Tyler Matsamas if considering applying.
The Centers for Innovation and Community Engagement in Solid Earth Geohazards program
supports university-based centers to advance research on the fundamental solid Earth
processes that underpin natural hazards. Centers will catalyze, coordinate, and produce
transformative research, lead innovation, and enable convergent approaches for systems-level
insights that require the collective efforts of a large group of individuals. Centers
will also foster different dimensions of community engagement to meaningfully improve
the national welfare. Flagship community engagement activities will take bold and
creative action to broaden participation of underrepresented groups in the geoscience
workforce and expand the impact of fundamental research in solid Earth geohazards
to inform and prepare a broader community. Centers will establish partnerships to
enable public outreach, hazard mitigation and other community engagement activities.
DOD Office of Naval Research (ONR) Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program
Amount: $1,000,000
Deadline: March 30, 2022
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) seeks a broad range of applications for augmenting existing and/or developing innovative solutions that directly maintain and/or cultivate a diverse, world-class Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce to maintain the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ technological superiority. The goal of proposed efforts must provide solutions that establish, build, and/or maintain STEM educational pathways and workforce opportunities for diverse U.S. citizens directly relevant to ONR science and technology areas.
