Research Education – REd

The Office of Research Education (REd) provides “comprehensive training and learning opportunities and resources for faculty, students and staff engaged in responsible conduct of research at the University of Utah.”  The primary goals of the REd Office are to:

  • Offer up-to-date courses and seminars linked to the research enterprise
  • Ensure that faculty, students, and staff develop the necessary skills to implement best practices for research
  • Provide faculty, students, and staff with access to resources and tools to implement best practices for research

Research Mentoring Certificate Program
The Office Research Education (REd) is excited to share our new offerings in research mentoring for both mentors and mentees. The goal with this initiative is to provide classes and resources to enhance the knowledge and implementation of effective research mentoring for University of Utah faculty, staff, post-docs, and graduate students. Some of our new offerings include the Research Mentoring Certificate, a variety of speakers for professional development, a specific research mentoring listserv, and more.

The certificate involves six classes presented in Canvas course format, accompanied by five live meetings held via Zoom. There are two pathways to complete the Mentoring Certificate:

  • Research Mentoring Certificate – Cohort 
  • Research Mentoring Certificate – Individual Classes

The Research Mentoring Certificate – Cohort (Fall 2021) is now open for registration with the cohort running for six weeks from 9/1/2021 - 10/6/2021. The cohort pathway has a participant cap of 40 individuals. Click here to register for the Fall 2021 Research Mentoring Certificate – Cohort. The required classes for the cohort pathway include:

  • Class 1: Elements of Effective Mentoring/Developing a Mentoring Philosophy (Asynchronous)
  • Class 2: Establishing Expectations and Maintaining Effective Communication
  • Class 3: Assessing Understanding and Fostering Independence
  • Class 4: Fostering Academic Literacies
  • Class 5: Research and Mentoring Ethics
  • Class 6: Promoting Mentees’ Career Development

Research Education (REd) Grant Writing Academy – Fall 2021

Registration for the November 5 – 7, 2021 Research Education Grant Writing Academy is now open!  Given the increasingly competitive environment for federal funding, it is essential that the University provide clear guidance and strong mentorship for our junior faculty members in refining their grant proposals and enhancing their likelihood of funding.

The Research Education (REd) Grant Writing Academy (GWA) is a 2.5-day intensive program that utilizes proven strategies and techniques to:

  • Develop successful proposals for a variety of funding agencies including NSF, NIH, DOE, and more
  • Conceptualize clear and concise aims that are specific, measurable, and realistic
  • Communicate research priorities with a focus on significance and impact
  • Build strategies for career development and long-term research plans
  • Interpret program announcements and understand review criteria
  • Revise a grant for resubmission
