Corporate Funding Opportunities

PIVOT Center works with companies to thoroughly understand their R&D goals and match them to research goals of the appropriate faculty members at the University of Utah. PIVOT’s Corporate Engagement team works across all schools and units to facilitate partnerships and offer expertise on identifying opportunities that include grant funding, sponsored research and creating strategic corporate partnerships. PIVOT also provides guidance to faculty for successful stewardship. Bayer Crop Science: Sustainably protecting crops while preserving natural habitats
Amount: $15,000

Bayer is seeking novel approaches and technologies that sustainably protect crops while preserving natural habitats.

Solutions of interest include:

  • Traits that improve nutrient and water use efficiency or increase carbon sequestration in row crops, fruits and vegetables.
  • Novel approaches to optimize, identify and validate gene or protein expression, activity and regulation.
  • Novel approaches to discover and optimize native crop genes
  • Novel approaches to increase genetic diversity/variation in crops
  • Novel approaches for reducing insect and nematode damage or reducing fungal growth and symptoms
  • Novel approaches for increasing tolerance to herbicide applications and/or lower weed pressure
  • Controlled-release technologies for active ingredients and biologicals

Bayer Crop Science: Digital tools for collecting, transmitting and analyzing agronomic data Amount: $15,000
Deadline: August 31, 2021

With remote sensors, satellites and drones, farmers now have access to more data than ever. By modeling this data, we can provide farmers with useful insights to make critical and timely in-field decisions, such as predicting environmental pressures or vulnerability to pests. While real-time data drives the precise application of resources, software allows for quick, easy analysis of crop management and protection.

Pfizer: Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma
Amount: $250,000
Deadline: August 31, 2021

Independent Medical Education projects that will be considered for Pfizer support will focus on increasing healthcare professional understanding of BCMA-directed therapies (BCMAxCD3 bi-specifics; BCMA-ADC; BCMA –CAR-T cells) in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma, including:

  • Mechanisms of action
  • Available clinical data – efficacy insights and side effect profiles
  • Scientific rationale for potential sequencing of therapies
  • Use of predictive or prognostic biomarkers
  • Role of sBCMA on this therapeutic class
  • Therapy management

Samsung: Global Research Outreach Program

Amount: $150,000

The SAMSUNG Global Research Outreach (GRO) Program is an important part of growing SAMSUNG Electronics's academic research engagement and collaboration platforms.

World-class university researchers have been annually invited since 2009 to propose novel research ideas and to work with our R&D teams to foster technological innovation. This has resulted in actively collaborative relationships with over 150 leading universities worldwide.

Selected GRO projects will be funded with one year. This project may be extended up to three years, based on annual research outcomes and necessity for further research partnership determined by SAMSUNG. Joint research proposals from multiple universities are welcome and acceptable.

Nature Research: Faculty Innovation Award

The Global Grants for Gut Health is a competitive program for investigator-initiated research into the human gut microbiota, supported by Yakult and Nature Research. In 2021, the Global Grants for Gut Health will consider proposals for one-year research projects that advance understanding of the role of the early life microbiome in human health.

Solid research is the underlying driving force to crystallize fearless creativity and innovation. While we are committed to run in-house research and engineering, we are also excited to collaborate with academic partners to facilitate exploration of new and promising research. The Sony Focused Research Award provides an opportunity for university faculty and Sony to conduct this type of collaborative, focused research. The award provides up to $150K USD* in funds, and may be renewed for subsequent year(s).

Pfizer: Optimizing Patient Access to CDK 4/6 Inhibitors in the Armamentarium Against Metastatic Breast Cancer
Amount: $250,000
Deadline: September 27, 2021

The goal is to close gaps in care so that all HR+/HER2- mBC patients have equal access to this therapeutic option. All patients should have access to the same high quality of care as delivered by academic or NCI-designated cancer centers.

The intent of this RFP is to increase healthcare professionals’ knowledge and understanding of the clinical trial and real world evidence for the CDK 4/6i class.

Pfizer: PARP-inhibitor Combination Treatments in Prostate Cancer
Amount: $250,000
Deadline: October 13, 2021

 Projects that will be considered for Pfizer support will focus on:

  • Increasing the understanding of the mechanism of action, biological and clinical rationale for PARP-inhibitor combinations as potential treatments for prostate cancer. Projects focusing on PARP-inhibitor combinations with androgen receptor targeted therapies are of high interest.
  • The evolving paradigm of the potential treatment of mCRPC with future PARP inhibitor combinations.

Johnson & Johnson, Packaging Design QuickFire Challenge: Unit Dose Technologies
Amount: up to $100,000
Deadline: October 15, 2021

To inspire innovators to bring potentially groundbreaking unit dose packaging options to the market – with a focus on child-resistant, user-friendly, non-reclosable designs - Johnson & Johnson Innovation together with the packaging innovation team within Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. is launching the Packaging Design QuickFire Challenge: Unit Dose Technologies. Potential innovations can include both solids (tablets, capsules and powders) and liquids (solutions and suspensions) in unit-dose formats (e.g. blisters, sachets and stick packs). Primary and secondary packaging or combination of the two are in scope of the challenge.

  • Lab monitoring, etc.

This award will provide funds to undertake a basic research project in the bleeding disorders field. Focus areas for such projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Role of FVIII outside of coagulation
  • Inhibitors
  • Immunogenicity
  • Lab monitoring research and applications.

Bayer: Fellowship Project Award – Hemophilia
Amount: $80,000
Deadline: LOI due November 30, 2021

This award is intended to facilitate the development of clinical and research expertise in the field of hemophilia for applicants who have completed medical training and have an interest in pursuing a career as a hemophilia clinician. The award will support a mentored physician for one year, who will be expected to undertake a research project as well as clinical training.

The criteria by which applications will be judged include:

  • Merit of applicant and approach
  • Design and rationale of research project
  • Design and rationale of the proposed clinical training program.
  • Potential for successful development of the applicant as a clinical expert in the treatment of hemophilia
  • Mentor and learning environment.
  • Commitment of applicant and mentor to hemophilia

American Heart Association: Career Development Award
Amount: $231,000/3 years
Deadline: December 6, 2021

Supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals, in the early years of one’s first professional appointment, to explore innovative questions or pilot studies that will provide preliminary data and training necessary to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist.

The award will develop the research skills to support and greatly enhance the awardee’s chances to obtain and retain a high-quality career position.
