Limited Submissions
Limited Submissions are extramural funding opportunities that limit the number applications
submitted per institution. Faculty that are interested in applying for a limited submission
that is not posted on InfoReady must contact the Office of the Vice President for
Research to verify their eligibility and ensure that another application has not been
selected to submit.
Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) - NSF 18-513
Internal Deadline: Monday, October 19th 2020
External Deadline: Friday, January 1st, 2021
Award Amount: Varies
Program Synopsis
The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation
for research and research training in our Nation's institutions of higher education
and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations.
An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.
An MRI proposal may request up to $4 million for either acquisition or development of a research instrument. Beginning with the FY 2018 competition, each performing organization may submit in revised “Tracks” as defined below:
- Track 1 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,000 and less than $1,000,000. The University of Utah is limited to twoTrack 1 proposals.
- Track 2 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,000,000 up to and including $4,000,000. The University of Utah is limited to oneTrack 2 proposal.
The number of MRI proposal submissions allowed per institution continues to be a maximum of three, but is now based on the dollar value of the amount requested from NSF.
Please see solicitation NSF 18-513 for full program details and eligibility requirements.
Required Application Information
Research Narrative: PDF Format Only - 2 page maximum research statement that identifies the following:
- Whether the proposal will be submitted to Track 1 or Track 2
- A summary of the instrumentation to be purchased
- Significance of the instrumentation to the University of Utah
- Potential users of the instrumentation
- Project participants and qualifications of the PI and co-PIs
- Relevance of the instrumentation to the goals and priorities of NSF and the MRI program
- The anticipated budget total
Biosketch: PDF Format Only - 2 page, NSF-style biosketch for all PIs, co-PIs, and senior personnel
Review Process
Applications will be reviewed by a campus-wide committee who will evaluate the likelihood
that the proposed project will be funded by NSF, and also ensure that a diversity
of projects and disciplines are selected from different units on campus. Applicants
will be notified of the final decisions by Monday, November 2nd, 2020, in time to prepare a full proposal to the sponsor.
