Research Highlight: LIGO Scientific Collaboration

On August 23rd, 2019, Professors Keunhan Park, Stephan LeBohec, Vikram Deshpande, and Yue Zhao obtained a formal membership into the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC). The LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) is an international community of scientists focused on the direct detection of gravitational waves to study and explore the physics of gravity, gravitational wave science, and astronomical phenomena. This is the first LSC membership that has ever been granted in the University of Utah.

Campus-wide Extramural Award Classification Policy & Procedure Update

The Offices of the Vice President for Research and the Vice President for Institutional Advancement announce the release of a new campus-wide policy and process to guide the determination of extramural award classification between the categories of gift or sponsored project. This new gift or sponsored project determination process is the result of a 13-month peer consultation and internal discussion process and is meant to inform whether an extramural award should be handled as a gift through the Office of Institutional Advancement or as a sponsored project through the Office of Sponsored Projects.

Lessons Learned: Shelf Unit Incident

What happened? A maintenance worker was restocking a shelf when they climbed onto the shelf to place items on the top. The shelving was not properly secured and fell forward onto the employee, injuring them. Rather than seeking needed medical attention the employee tried to clean up the mess. What went right: • EHS was informed of incident in a timely manner • Concerted effort to fix similar issues across campus post incident

HHMI Investigator Program Opens National Competition

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is seeking to appoint approximately 20 new Investigators through a national open competition. This effort will expand HHMI’s community of nearly 300 Investigators, who perform basic biological research across the nation. HHMI Investigators receive a seven-year appointment, which is renewable pending favorable scientific review. HHMI encourages Investigators to push their research fields into new areas of inquiry.
