Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation – Innovation Award 
Deadline: July 1, 2019 
Grant Amount: Up to $800,000 
Categories: Health Sciences, Cancer Research 
  

The Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award is designed to provide support for the next generation of exceptionally creative thinkers with “high-risk/high-reward” ideas that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. The Innovation Award is specifically designed to provide funding to extraordinary early career researchers who have an innovative new idea but lack sufficient preliminary data to obtain traditional funding. It is not designed to fund incremental advances. The research supported by the award must be novel, exceptionally creative and, if successful, have the strong potential for high impact in the cancer field.

Quantum Systems Initiative, Moore Foundation 
Deadline: July 26, 2019  
Grant Amount: $1,500,000 to $1,900,000  

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is now accepting pre-applications for experimental investigators of the  Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems Initiative (EPiQS). Through EPiQS, the foundation strives to accelerate progress in the field of quantum materials—solids and engineered structures characterized by novel quantum phases of matter and exotic cooperative behaviors of electrons.  

The EPiQS experimental investigator awards support U.S. experts in experimental studies of quantum materials to pursue discovery of new emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena in materials, elucidate the origin of previously known emergent phenomena, develop new experimental techniques for probing quantum materials, or significantly improve the performance of the existing techniques. The foundation currently supports 19 experimental investigators through grants that extend through early 2020. The 2019 competition will result in a similar number of investigator awards, with a total portfolio budget of about $34 million. Awardees will receive five years of funding with streamlined reporting requirements and the freedom to choose their own research directions and to allocate their grant budget to achieve maximum scientific impact.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative – Essential Open Source Software for Science 
Deadline: August 1, 2019 
Grant Amount: Up to $250,000 
Categories: Engineering, Health Sciences, Science
  

Beginning June 18, this initiative will accept the first round of applications for open source software projects that are essential to biomedical research, with a goal to support software maintenance, growth, development, and community engagement for these tools. Software projects should have already demonstrated impact and show potential for continued improvement. Grants are for a one-year period with the potential to apply for renewal in future cycles.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Research Grants 
Deadline: August 1, 2019 
Grant Amount: up to $1.5M 
Categories: Health Sciences, Social Science
  

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is accepting letters of inquiry for innovative, high-risk, potentially high-yield projects that focus on a specific area of suicide prevention. These areas have been determined by AFSP and its Scientific Council, and are reviewed and updated annually. Applicants must submit a Letter of Intent by August 1st to be eligible to apply. 

Focus Grant applications should involve: 

  1. Short-term risk: to develop identification and/or intervention strategies for short-term suicide risk that can be implemented in clinical settings; 
  1. 20% by 2025: Universal, selective and indicated interventions that target one or more specific risk factors for suicide and that, if implemented on a large scale, would reduce the annual U.S. suicide rates; or 
  1. Blue sky research grants: innovative, impactful study in an area of suicide research that will achieve significant goals. This mechanism is intended for studies that, by their very nature, are clearly beyond the financial scope of our Innovation Grants.

Simons Foundation – Autism Research Initiative Bridge to Independence Award 
Deadline: August 8, 2019 
Grant Amount: $495,000

The BTI Award program promotes talented early-career scientists by facilitating their transition to research independence and providing grant funding at the start of their professorships. Annual Request for applications (RFA) opens each spring and are aimed at senior postdoctoral fellows who intend to seek tenure-track faculty positions during the upcoming academic year. Awardees will receive a commitment of $495,000 over three years, activated upon assumption of a tenure-track professorship at a U.S. or Canadian research institution. 

The BTI Award program welcomes applications that span the breadth of science that SFARI normally supports, including genetics, molecular mechanisms, circuits and systems, and clinical science.
