The University of Utah is a nationally recognized R1 research institution and the flagship university for the state. Its growing research community is continuously working on new discoveries and finding solutions to some of society’s greatest issues.
Innovate U was launch earlier this year and focuses on research stories, news and highlights from the many fields of study at the university. Some of the stories that have been featured on the site so far include groundbreaking diabetes treatment, postpartum mental health, childcare crisis in the U.S., and a new initiative to ensure Southwest regional climate solutions.
The goal is for Innovate U to grow and become the place where Utahns — and everyone — goes to find the latest updates from our U research community on what they are working on, why it’s important, and how it could and/or will make an impact.

Autisms missing microbes may influence social behavior protecting gut
For people with autism, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain often go along with the social struggles and repetitive behaviors that define the condition. This has prompted many to wonder whether gastrointestinal (GI) problems arise due to autism’s behavioral or sensory features, or whether they might instead contribute to them. Now, scientists at University of Utah Health have added to mounting evidence showing that microbes that live in our guts influence behavior. Read more.
Immersive VR Trains Miners for the Real World
The Center for Mine Safety and Health at the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Utah, in collaboration with the Chile-based company Minverso, has developed the initial phase of a first-ever metaverse platform that includes a mining training program using virtual reality (VR). This collaborative initiative blends cutting-edge technology with academic expertise for the benefits of both students and the mining industry. Read More.
