The University of Utah Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team hosted the leadership of EHS programs from major western universities from May 6 to 8. Over 20 senior directors attended from BYU, USC, Stanford, Cal-Berkeley, Colorado, Arizona, Washington, WashingtonState, and Oregon.

The meeting focused on sharing lessons learned, best practices, and building relationships among professionals devoted to keeping our workplaces safe.

“Keeping our workers and students safe and making sure we are complying with all the applicable environmental, health and safety regulations can be challenging at an institution as large and complex as the University of Utah,” said Frederick A. Monette, Executive Director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Utah. “It requires experts in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, bio-safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials, occupational health and medicine, and air and water quality.

“In addition to our own U of U experts, we have a strong network of colleagues at our peer Tier 1 research institutions – getting together with them periodically allows us to make sure we are at the forefront of health and safety, learning from others, and benefiting from the lessons learned at these other prestigious universities.”
