Export Control & Foreign Influence Training – Nov. 19

October 6, 2024

The Office of the Vice President for Research is hosting a training session on US export control regulations and Federal undue foreign influence concerns. Attendees will be provided with a practical orientation of export control and foreign influence issues in the context of research and related service activities. All Principal Investigators, Research Administrators, Postdoctoral Scholars, and Student Researchers are encouraged to attend the training sessions. Don Fischer, Principal of Fischer & Associates, advises universities and research institutions about these topics, and will be the presenter.

Export Control: Federal law requires that the University of Utah actively manage the export of any sensitive equipment, software and technology in accordance with national security interests and foreign policy objectives. “Export” includes disclosure to foreign nationals studying and working on the University campus. It is imperative that PI’s and anyone who works with PI’s understand these regulations and assist the University in fulfilling its compliance obligations. All scientific research is affected by these laws, including international collaborations. This affects fundamental research as well as sponsor-restricted programs.

Foreign Influence: While maintaining the University’s commitment to supporting an open research culture, researchers must also be mindful of protecting scientific and technological innovation from being stolen or exploited by foreign sources. This training will provide practical information to help you take protective actions to mitigate research integrity risks without compromising the values that distinguish the U.S. research enterprise.
