The Office of the Associate Vice President for Research Integrity & Compliance (ORIC) in partnership with the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) welcomes Marissa Weaselboy as the University of Utah NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990) Coordinator. Ms. Weaselboy will be managing the inventory and curation of NAGPRA collections (ancestral remains and associated funerary objects and beings1); coordinating with state and federal agencies; establishing and maintaining relationships with Tribal Nations; and serving as the institutional point of contact for inquiries about information on Native American ancestral remains and associated objects and beings that abide to the January 2024 NAGPRA amendments.
The new amendments to NAGPRA require consultation with Tribal Nations to make determinations of NAGPRA eligible items and beings, as well as requiring repatriation based on the geographic location of ancestral remains.
In connection with the ORIC & NHMU Ms. Weaselboy will be key to the institution’s efforts to address ethical repatriation under NAGPRA and ensure compliance to the NAGPRA requirements.
Ms. Weaselboy is an enrolled citizen of the Yomba Shoshone Tribe. She holds a master’s degree in linguistic anthropology and has several research interests including Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)/Indigenous Knowledges, Indigenizing Human-Environment Interactions, and Indigenous Feminisms. Additionally, she is completing her doctoral degree from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.
