Research Administration Units

The Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) handles research infrastructure, policies and compliance at the University of Utah. The VPR office oversees the following research administration units:

Center for Technology & Venture Commercialization

University of Utah is committed to commercializing new technologies and inventions from discoveries made and developed at the U. As a recognized leader, the Center for Technology & Venture Commercialization (TVC) drives value from an invention’s discovery to its transformation into practical use. The TVC office supports innovative research through a comprehensive suite of services. In addition, TVC catalyzes ecosystem stakeholders to promote investment and company-building from University innovations.


Conflict of Interest

The Conflict of Interest (COI) office supports the university community in identifying and managing financial conflicts of interest in the three areas of: Research and Scholarly Activities; Procurement; and Intellectual Property. COI works with faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, students and others who are required to disclose external financial interests to the University for evaluation.


Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee

The Office of Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) was created to ensure safety, integrity and compliance for animal subjects. IACUC enforces protocol in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.  


Institutional Review Board

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with the review of all research projects that involve humans to ensure that projects comply with local, state, and federal laws, as well as the high ethical standards set forth in University policy. The IRB prides itself on serving the University's research community by applying the highest standards of intellectual integrity and careful attention to federal research regulations.


Office of Sponsored Projects

The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is responsible for the effective and timely handling of research proposals. OSP prepares, interprets, negotiates, and executes agreements on behalf of the University of Utah for projects funded by federal and state agencies, foundations, and other public and private sources. OSP is focused on enhancing research by providing service and support to administration, faculty, and staff in their efforts to secure and manage external funding for university activities.


Radiation Safety

The Office of Radiation Safety (RSO) oversees the use of all radioactive material and ionizing radiation-producing devices at the University of Utah in accordance with federal and state radiation control regulations, and according to the university's broad-scope radioactive materials license issued by the State of Utah.


Research Development Office

The Research Development Office helps the research and scholarly community cultivate a national and international leading research presence through the facilitation of federal funding that enhances excellence, innovation, and interdisciplinary research at the University of Utah.


Research Education

Research Education provides professional development and training opportunities for all faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, students and members of the University research community.


Research Integrity & Compliance

The Office of Research Integrity & Compliance is responsible for providing oversight to the university's Institutional Review Board (IRB), the University's Conflict-of-Interest policy, evaluations of allegations of Research Misconduct, Research Education and Training, Resource for Genetic and Epidemiologic Research (RGE), and the Institutional Biosafety Committee.


Research Operations & Communications

The Research Operations and Communications Unit seeks to cultivate a national and international leading research community by servicing the University of Utah researchers and support teams with enhanced communication, information, and efficiencies.
