Research Instrumentation Fund Program

Deadlines will be on January 15 & September 15

Program Purpose

The Research Instrumentation Fund is a competitive program that provides support to faculty and to core facilities for new equipment purchases, or to replace or upgrade existing research instruments.

The Research Instrumentation Fund is available to individuals who currently hold a faculty appointment at the University of Utah, and to University of Utah core facilities  There are separate applications for individuals and for the core facilities.  In order to apply as a core facility, you must have prior approval to be recognized as a core facility.

There are two applications, one for Faculty and the other is for Core Facilities. Make sure you choose the correct application.

Only core facility directors should initiate core equipment requests.

The Research Instrumentation Fund will accept computer proposals  with clear, and strong justification of need.

Evaluation criteria includes: 1) sharing of equipment by more than one laboratory, 2) likely impact of funding on scholarship and productivity, 3) probability of increased extramural funding resulting from an award, and 4) other factors that demonstrate potential benefit to the University.

Please verify that similar equipment is not currently available on campus through the Find Equipment link. If similar equipment is available, provide justification why addition equipment is needed.

Funding comes from the University's indirect cost reimbursements. Equipment purchased with central funds is meant to be shared as broadly as possible. On the individual request form, please address equipment and how reasonable access can be provided to other researchers. Please provide justification if the equipment cannot be housed in a core facility.

The grant period is for one year only and funds must be expended within that year. Only in unusual circumstances will a written request for an extension be considered. If awarded, please identify the PI on any/all requisitions.

Please apply here for the Research Instrumentation Fund.
